Aramid cable: stronger, safer, and more sustainable

Equipment rope (mooring line) is one of the important equipment to ensure the safety of dock personnel and crew. However, safety accidents and serious accidents are now too common, many of which involve sudden rupture of safety cables. For greater safety, the cable must be stronger. With the increase in ship size, this has never been more important than it is now. More importantly, with the rapid growth of attention to climate change, sustainable development is an increasingly important consideration.

As a new type of functional structural material, aramid has the characteristics of light weight, high specific strength and stiffness, fatigue resistance, creep resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, good wear resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good wave permeability. It has been highly valued by the shipbuilding industry, especially in the manufacturing of high-quality ship structures.

Therefore, due to its good weather resistance, water resistance, corrosion resistance, and resistance to marine organisms, aramid fiber string is more suitable for use in marine environments than other materials.

More powerful: suitable for today's demanding applications

Nowadays, due to the continuous pursuit of maritime efficiency, the volume of cargo ships has become increasingly large, with the largest container ships almost 15 times that of 1968. The increase in size requires stronger mooring lines. Aramid fibers provide the necessary strong support for this. Its strength is five times that of steel, and it also provides excellent dimensional stability and flexibility, which is very important in mooring operations. More importantly, aramid fibers do not experience creep - this is an important issue for other fibers.

Safer: More reliable in hotter places

One of the reasons for safety hazards such as broken mooring lines is their inability to withstand high temperatures. Tests that perform well on general mooring lines are usually only conducted under humid 21 ° C laboratory conditions, and do not test the reliability of safe mooring lines under various weather conditions. The particular issue that needs to be faced is that mooring lines must be able to cope with the high temperatures that may occur in hotter or drier geographical areas such as decks, which can easily rise to temperatures above 50 ° C. Aramid fibers do not melt before 450 ° C - therefore, at higher temperatures, the performance of aramid fiber mooring lines is better than that of any other synthetic material mooring line, and the duration is longer.

More sustainable: towards green solutions

Safety and strength are not the only advantages of aramid cables. As concerns about climate change continue to increase and sustainability regulations continue to tighten, the sustainability of mooring cables based on aramid fiber is an increasingly important advantage. In fact, aramid based mooring lines have a longer service life and are easier to recycle. When they reach the end of their service life stage, the aramid material from these mooring lines can be used to continue manufacturing brake linings and pads, providing a substitute for asbestos.
