Carbon fiber composite cables are used in bridges

People initially used natural wood and stone to build bridges, but gradually developed to use concrete, steel, and special artificial materials. The continuous progress of materials has driven the continuous development of bridge engineering.

The main cause of damage to bridge cables and suspension cables is corrosion, which requires high resistance to fatigue and corrosion of materials. Carbon fiber materials have excellent corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, strength modulus, etc. Therefore, some scholars have used carbon fiber reinforcement as a material for making stay cables and suspension cables.

The capacity of carbon fiber composite material is only 1/5 of that of steel. Compared with steel cables, using carbon fiber composite material can provide the ultimate span of high suspension cable structures. Research has shown that the ultimate span of steel cables is 7.7 km, and that of carbon fiber composite cables is 37.5 km. Therefore, bridges can achieve larger spans.

Comparison between steel and CFRP

In 2005, Academician Lv Zhitao and others from Southeast University led the design and construction of the first carbon fiber composite cable stayed bridge in China, which adopted a single tower and double cable plane layout. The main beam and bridge tower were reinforced concrete structures, and all cables were made of carbon fiber composite cables.
